Hypervolt—how exactly does this vibration massager work?

For athletes who prioritize performance and recovery, massage guns are a must-have. The Hypervolt models from Hyperice—the global market leader in vibration, heat, and cold technology—are considered the gold standard.

The compact Hypervolt GO for on the go, and the Hypervolt Bluetooth and PLUS for more power. This makes it easy to use massage therapy anytime.

But how exactly does it work?

Using a small battery-powered motor, the rubber or foam massage head produces short, repetitive pulses. This gently yet intensely stimulates the targeted muscle.

This technique is also known as percussive therapy . This form of therapy is intended to loosen adhesions in the connective tissue and fascia. As a result, the fascia surrounding the muscles loosens permanently, and the muscles themselves feel more supple.

Another positive aspect is believed to relate to its neurological effect: massaging a muscle does not cause it to relax immediately. Rather, the impacts triggered by the massage gun activate sensory neurons in the muscle fibers.

These, in turn, send a signal to the brain via the increased muscle tension, which “commands” the muscles to relax.

Although there are not yet any scientific studies on the effects of massage guns due to the novelty of the products, initial evaluations show that a 5-minute vibration therapy session is equivalent to a 15-minute massage and both treatments resulted in significantly less muscle soreness than without any treatment at all. Participants who used the vibration device even reported faster recovery within the first 24 hours than those who received massage.

The Hypervolt is particularly suitable for people who train frequently and intensively. When used before a workout, it not only promotes faster recovery but also improves range of motion by loosening the fascia.

Athletes training for a specific event also benefit from these devices, as they help relieve muscle tension that can lead to overuse injuries. The vibration devices are also ideal for treating localized muscle pain, since a standard foam roller cannot reach deep tissue with the same precision as a massage gun.

Recommendations for using the Hypervolt:

  • Use the device only on muscle tissue and avoid blood vessels, such as the underside of the arms, the rib and groin areas, bones, the spine, and the veins in the neck.
  • In general, avoid sensitive areas.
  • Start with the lowest speed setting, which is usually sufficient. If you notice little improvement after treatment, increase to the next level if needed. As a general rule, it is better to massage individual areas for a longer period rather than with greater intensity.
  • The massage technique should be adapted to your personal goal:
  • Warm-up: Apply light pressure for 3–5 seconds using a wider attachment (such as the ball head), moving from top to bottom.
  • Post-workout massage: Massage for 5–10 minutes using a smaller attachment, focusing on large muscle groups (glutes, hamstrings, forearms, shoulder blades).
  • For severe, localized muscle tension: Hold the massage gun on the affected spot for 10–30 seconds (using a small attachment) and breathe deeply through the discomfort.
